Self Limiting Beliefs
How to recognise a self limiting belief
Â
If your client is not having the success, or achieving the results, that they most desire it’s rarely a case of practical solutions alone. We also need to help them address their thoughts and feelings about money, as well as themselves and the world around them, to make lasting change.
All of our behaviour is driven by our beliefs, whether consciously or unconsciously. Self-limiting beliefs can often creep into our thoughts, lower our self-regard and keep us stuck behaving in ways that don’t serve us. But it's possible to consciously change how we think about ourselves, reframing unhelpful beliefs and building more confidence to achieve goals and positively move forward in life.
Learning to recognise self-limiting beliefs and how these impact on our client's emotions and influence their behaviour is part of our role. It doesn’t matter whether or not they’re true. If they believe they’re true, they’re likely to produce results consistent with them. We can challenge them to not accept their limiting-beliefs as facts. Whenever you hear a client saying or thinking, “yes, but...”, recognise this as a limiting belief.

Watch the video to hear me discuss self limiting beliefs and how these stories may show up for clients, keeping them stuck in unconscious patterns around their money.
I demonstrate how to use the Belief Reframe Exercise above, using a client example.
The client's unquestioned beliefs from childhood had kept her from giving serious consideration to her dreams of self employment and also led to controlling behaviour around finances with her partner.
The video explains step by step how the exercise unfolded and the profound change of perspective (and action) that this created for the client.
