Pausing to acknowledge what unfolded in our latest training cohort
Jul 06, 2026
Another cohort of our Financial Coach Practitioner Certificate training has just come to an end, and I've been taking some time to reflect on what we've all been part of over the last few months.
When you're in the middle of delivering a training programme, there's always a next thing to think about. During the live sessions, you're focused on the next exercise or group discussion. Then, once the session ends, there's the reviewing, refining and preparing that happens behind the scenes: uploading recordings, getting groups ready for the following day, responding to questions. It's hard to step back and take in the whole journey while you're still in it. But when I do, I feel really moved by what unfolded.
The courage to practise
What has stood out most for me is the courage and openness everyone brought to the process. The richness of the questions, the honesty in the reflections, the willingness to step into practice even when it felt uncomfortable.
That's where so much of the learning happens. Financial coaching isn't something you learn simply by reading about it. It asks you to listen differently, to notice your own assumptions, to become more comfortable with silence and uncertainty. It asks you to trust that the client has far more wisdom and resourcefulness than you might initially realise.
What the trainees took away
Towards the end of the final session, we invited everyone to share a brief reflection on the course and one next step they were taking. One trainee described the training as something that had "opened up a new door" for their future life. Another summarised it as "inspiring, building confidence, practical skills". Someone else reflected that "financial coaching is about much more than just money".
Those words say so much about what this work is really about. This training is practical. It gives people tools, models, structure, and a clearer understanding of the boundaries between coaching, mentoring, financial guidance, advice and therapy. But the deeper learning often happens somewhere more personal. One trainee talked about how the course had helped her notice her own unconscious assumptions about why people find themselves in difficult financial situations. Another described it as a process of learning and unlearning. Of finding her own refreshed voice, and being able to help others trust theirs.
For me, that's such an important part of this work. There's a difference between training people to tell clients what to do, and training them to help clients think more clearly, understand themselves more deeply, and make choices that feel aligned with what's truly important to them. That's the difference we're really building here.
Why this work matters to me
This work has always been deeply meaningful to me. Many moons ago, when I stepped away from financial services and began exploring a different path, I spent time reflecting on what success really meant to me. The words that came to me then were about helping people find the courage to live their dreams and the power to heal their wounds.
At the time, I didn't fully appreciate how much those two words - courage and healing - would end up shaping everything that came after. But over time, they became the foundation of what Wise Monkey has grown into. And they run just as much through this training as they do through my work with clients.
The human side of money
Because that's really what all of this is about. Money isn't just budgets, pensions and investments, though of course those things matter too. It's identity. It's the story your family told about who gets to have money and who doesn't. It's the decision you've never spoken about out loud, and the dream you've talked yourself out of because it felt too big, or too late, or too much to ask for.
Living your dreams might mean finally admitting you want a different life to the one you've been quietly living. Healing a wound might mean forgiving yourself for something financial you did years ago and have carried in silence ever since. That's the work underneath the work, and it's exactly what we're training these coaches to be able to hold space for.
When I first started working this way, almost 25 years ago, it was all very new. The idea of working with people around money without it being driven by products, sales or financial advice was pretty unheard of and some people couldn't quite understand what I was trying to create. But I knew there was important work to be done in the space between the numbers and the person.
It means a huge amount to see that work continuing, growing, and becoming richer through the people we train.
The start of the journey
What feels especially powerful is that this training isn't just about the clients these new coaches will go on to support. It's just as much about each of them having the courage to shape their own path. For some, that might mean stepping away from work that no longer feels right. For others, it might mean bringing coaching into an existing role, or finding a different way of having conversations about money.
One trainee described leaving the course feeling "empowered, excited and inspired to help other people realise their potential". Another said the training had shifted her focus towards helping people take ownership of their financial wellbeing - "not by telling them what to do, but by helping them believe that they actually can".
That, for me, captures the heart of financial coaching.
Every cohort brings something different, and this one brought real generosity. The way they encouraged each other, offered feedback, and stayed connected throughout. Training people in this work is never just about passing on knowledge. The richness comes from the conversations, the practice, and the community that forms along the way.
So, to everyone who has just completed the training, thank you for your courage, your participation, and your willingness to keep learning. It's been a real privilege to be part of this journey with you.
